If you've been looking for a special reason to visit (or return to) the Calaveras wine region, may I suggest that the annual Holiday Open House to be held on Saturday, December 6, could just be that reason. The wineries in and around Murphys annually kick off the holiday season with fabulous food, music and other entertainment and - of course - great Calaveras wines. (The event also marks the annual debut of Mulled Mingle in our tasting room at Solomon - a delightfully decadent and warming hot mulled wine made from our Muse Mingle red wine blend. Just the aroma alone will be enough to boost your holiday spirits!)
While you're between tasting rooms, you can do some fanciful holiday shopping at the quaint (and family owned) shops in Murphys and dine at our growing array of restaurants - everything from deli fare and specialty pizza to Bay Area quality fine dining. Any tasting room can offer recommendations - and even help you with reservations. I also have heard rumors that Santa and Mrs. Claus will be roaming the streets of Murphys - just because they think it is a great place to escape to before the rigors of late December set in!
This year, the Calaveras wine association is teaming with the Human Resources Council of Calaveras County to promote a canned food drive for the needy in Calaveras County. Bring your gift of non-perishable food items and drop them off in one of the Santa Express Boxes or Wine Barrels in the tasting rooms and you will have any tasting fees waved and will also enjoy discounts of 10% or more off your wine purchases! Seventeen wineries are participating in the canned food drive - and you can enjoy these benefits at every winery to which you donate canned goods!
So you cannot lose! Enjoy a healthy dose of holiday spirit to kick off the season, discover some truly great Calaveras wines and food, get a head start on your shopping and contribute to a better Christmas for those in need.
The Holiday Open House funs from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6. I hope to welcome you all at the Solomon Tasting Room and guide you on your holiday journey through Calaveras.
