The Presidents' Valentine

The confluence of Presidents' Day Weekend with Valentines' Day presents an almost unprecedented array of wine tasting opportunities over the February 13-14 weekend.

First, at the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg (just south of Sacramento), the five resident wineries (Including my winery, Solomon) will be hosting our annual Port & Chocolate Festival (which it seems like most of California's wine regions are also doing.  Good thing Valentines' Day was not originally linked with sardines.)  Each of the wineries will be offering special tastings, ports and other dessert wines paired with a massive array of custom chocolates.  Special pricing will be available for both the ports and chocolates offered.  There will also be live music and deli meals available from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m on both Saturday and Sunday.  The admission charge is $10.00 per person, which includes a commemorative glass.  I'll be on hand in the Solomon Tasting Room on Sunday to share some of my port and chocolate mixed drink creations (think "Chocolate Covered Cherries" for one).

In our Foothills home of Murphys, Presidents' Weekend is always one of the three biggest weekends of the year.  George Washington and Abe Lincoln will both be on hand to lead the festivities in Downtown Murphys (and its 19 tasting rooms).  All wineries who are members of the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance will be offering special barrel/reserve/library tastings, delicious food and appetizers, with many offering entertainment as well.  There will also be special discounts on many of the wines offered.  On Saturday, CWA logo glasses will be on sale for $10.00 per glass.  This glass will serve as your admission ticket to the weekend's festivities.  I'll be in the tasting room in Murphys on Saturday in my usual Presidents' Day Weekend guise of Caleb B. Smith, Secretary of the Interior for Mr. Lincoln.  (There's a story behind this.  Drop in on Saturday and I'll be happy to share it with you.)    If you've not explored the fabulous Mediterranean varietals (think Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvedre, Sangiovese, Viognier, etc.) that are being produced in the Foothills recently, Presidents' Weekend would be a great time to do so.

I hope to see you in Murphys on Saturday or Clarksburg on Sunday (maybe both?)
