The Wine World in the Park

There is still time to enjoy the final weekend of the 2010 Calaveras Wineries Passport event, this weekend of June 25 through 27.  The highlight of the weekend is Friday night's "Taste the World of Calaveras" picnic in Murphys Park in downtown Murphys.  For this event, the park is divided into five "regions" reflecting the diversity of wine grapes grown in Calaveras.  Spanish wines and Spanish foods will be featured in Spain.  We'll also have representative wines and foods for Italy, California (think barbecue!), Rhone, and the rest of France (mostly Bordeaux).  All within the space of beautiful Murphys park.  All between 5:30 and 8:30.  All for only $25.00.  A limited number of tickets will be available at the park before the event.

If you cannot make it to the Friday picnic, there's still a full weekend of fun, food, and special tastings at participating CWA wineries.  As a sampler:

  • Ironstone Vineyards will be featuring "Gold Rush Grub" and reserve barrel tastings
  • Lavender Ridge will be featuring specialty pairings of artisan cheeses and gourmet foods
  • Milliare will be barbecuing - with a special "smoked on the spot" pork shoulder
  • Newsome-Harlow will be featuring Chef Melanie's fabulous pizzettas
  • Twisted Oak will offer yet another take on their "Twisted Fare" - a "Carne Torcido" tri-tip with all the fixin's.
This is just a sampling of the offerings of the 22 member wineries who will be participating.  In addition, many wineries are offering music and entertainment (hear Robby Brown and the Outer Edge Band at Frog's Tooth on Saturday) and all are offering special discounts for passport holders - many making passport holders "wine club members for a day."

So head up to Murphys this weekend.  The weather should be beautiful and a limited number of passports will be available for sale at selected wineries on Saturday.

Cheers!
