As we roll into December, 2010, we encounter the official start of the Holiday Season, 2010. (I guess that starts with the ceremonial lighting of the tree in New York's Rockefeller Center - or at least that's what NBC would like us to believe.)
The Calaveras Wine Country is a great place to absorb the Holiday atmosphere - and to do a little shopping for the wine lovers on your shopping list. The "official" start to the Calaveras holidays is Holiday Open House, held Friday evening, December 3, and on Saturday, December 4. The Friday evening affair is a quiet time to visit Murphys restaurants and tasting rooms (all 20 of 'em) and share some Holiday cheer with the Locals. Saturday is a bit more grand, with tasting rooms offering Holiday specials on wines and other wine-related merchandise, along with some special wines for sampling and purchase. Some wineries (my Solomon Wine Company included) will be offering hot mulled wine to warm you as you enjoy the Holiday decorations and Foothills' spirit from noon until 5:00 p.m.
If you cannot make it on Friday or Saturday, don't worry - the Holiday cheer extends through the full month of December. Many wineries and tasting rooms are open extra hours (or extra days!) and all will offer great gift suggestions for the hard-to-buy-for wine aficionado - or maybe just for yourself. How about a gift-pack of Calaveras wines? Try a gift membership in a wine club for the gift that continues to give all year long! If your shopping list extends outside of the wine industry, Murphys offers an enticing array of boutiques and curio shops (as well as GREAT restaurants to restore you during or after your shopping experience).
The Foothills wine industry is always about friendly, unhurried, personalized service. During this season, the service seems a little friendlier and just as unhurried and personalized. So take a break from the hectic city holiday and enjoy a Foothills Holiday!
I hope to see you in our Murphys tasting room! Happy holidays to all!
