After the rush of the holidays, life slows down measurably in the Foothills. Many tasting rooms (including ours) has reduced hours/days and the crowds at any time are far smaller. Net, it's a great time to visit your favorite Foothills wineries and spend some serious face time with the winemakers/owners who are frequently staffing the tasting rooms.
Here's a great idea for a winter theme tasting visit to our Calaveras home: Ports! Actually, we cannot legally call these fortified dessert wines "port" anymore, but they sure look like, smell like, and taste like some delicious ports. And these specialty wines are such a perfect winter warmer - especially when paired with cheese, chocolate, nuts - and maybe even a bowl of tortilla chips. In Calaveras alone you can sample a fine array of port-style wines at many of our wineries, including Beaux Chevaux, Black Sheep, Brice Station, Chatom, Frog's Tooth, Hatcher, our own Solomon Wines, and Twisted Oak. There is certain to be something (or several somethings) to appeal to any Port aficionado
However, if you're looking for something closer to Sacramento, may I suggest "Port & Chocolate Lovers Weekend" to be held over Valentine's Day weekend (February 12 & 13) at the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg. Running from 11:00 a.m.until 5:00 p.m. both days, this event - always one of the highlights of the Old Sugar Mill's annual event calendar - offers not only fine chocolate and port tastings, but also barrel tastings, cellar tours, live entertainment and an array of fresh lunch fare provided by local eateries.
Cost of this event is only $25.00. Advance tickets are available online (www.oldsugarmill.com) and will also be available at the door for the same price. All six wineries of the Old Sugar Mill - Solomon, Todd Taylor, Three Wine Company, Heringer, Carvalho, and the Clarksburg Wine Company will each offer their own distinctive line of chocolates and dessert wines, so - again - there is sure to be something for everyone.
Best idea yet: plan to visit both Murphys and the Old Sugar Mill's Port & Chocolate Lovers Weekend because one can never have too much of a great thing!
