It seems appropriate with the opening of our new store in El Dorado Hills earlier this year, that we pay tribute and focus on the great history, tradition and value that we see in the Sierra Foothill wine industry.
The history of wine in California starts with the Spanish explorers and the Catholic church. As the Spanish moved north from Mexico and established missions along the way they always planted vineyard to supply wines for mass. The next boom was following the gold rush in Northern California. With the discovery of gold in nearby Coloma in 1849, vineyards begin to spring up as fast as mining camps. Many of those seeking their fortune in Northern California were from Europe, especially Italians. They planted varieties similar to their homeland. The gold supply eventually dwindled, but many of the vineyards remained, some to this day!
Most of the vines planted were red Mediterranean varieties; Barbera, Syrah, Mourvedres, Sangiovese and especially Zinfandel. Today we pay tribute to the pioneers of the Sierra Foothill wine industry like Boeger, Montevina, and Sobon (which now occupies the historic D'Agostini Winery). Add to that these rising stars: Narrow Gate and Miraflores, both in El Dorado County. Do not overlook these great wines from right in our own backyard.
Occasionally, I'll share something about a variety you might not have tried.
Today, it's Malbec. Once an important varietal in Bordeaux and the Loire in various blends, this not-very-hardy grape has been steadily replaced by Merlot and the two Cabernets. The only place in France you will find it as a stand-alone wine is in the Cahors region in the southwest. However, in Argentina this varietal has found a home and has become the most emblematic Argentine wine. Thanks in part to the research done by Dr. Nicolas Catena of Bodega Catena Zapata. In 1983 he performed a rigorous study of vineyard locations throughout the Mendoza region to find the best vineyard sites and soil conditions. At the same time he identified over 140 clones of Malbec and narrowed it down to a handful that would make world-class wines. This research along with modern wine making techniques makes Malbec from Argentina, not only great quality, but also very affordable. Check out the Malbecs we offer at Nugget. .
