What is a Klinker Brick?

Hi everyone, this is Steve Felten. Along with my wife Lori, and daughter Farrah, we are the owners of Klinker Brick Winery. We are a six generation wine grape growing family in Lodi and have some of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards in this region. With 15 Old Vine Zinfandel vineyards under our care, ranging in age from 35 to 111 years in age, it's no wonder we specialize in Old Vine Zinfandel, America's heritage grape.

Klinker Brick Winery was started with the release of our 2000 Old Vine Zinfandel after selling on the open market for four years to other producers in Napa and Sonoma. In 2001, we introduced the Klinker Brick Farrah Syrah and in 2003 the Old Ghost Old Vine Zinfandel was released representing the best lot of Zinfandel that we produce each year. These are the only wines we produce giving us the ability to stay focused on creating world class Zinfandels and Syrah.

My expertise is in the growing of the grapes. For 30-plus years I have been honing my skills on growing high quality Zinfandel and now through the creation of our own wines, realize that all the hard work and attention to detail out in the vineyard has brought Klinker Brick Winery the reputation of producing the very best Old Vine Zinfandels from the Lodi appellation.

This blog will give you insight into the growing and care we put into our vineyards to produce the exciting, award winning wines everyone has come to enjoy from Klinker Brick Winery. I will try to answer questions and hopefully we can all learn more about this fantastic wine, Zinfandel.

Now to answer the beginning question: A Klinker Brick has distinctive qualities, including unique shapes and dark, rich color, these bricks are "heavier" than regular bricks. "Klinker" refers to the sound that they would make when banged together because of their increased weight. Rich, deep color, enormous density, unique and distinctive are the same qualities found in our old vine Zinfandel.

Talk to you soon,

Steve Felten

ZIN FAN FELTEN of Lodi
